In his junior year, he represented the school in the Beijing University Games and won the first place in the 400-meter run. In 1959, at the peak of his physical fitness, he participated in the first National Games as a college student, breaking the national record at the time with a time of 54.4 seconds and becoming the champion of the men's 400-meter hurdles in the first National Games. After the National Games, Zhong Nanshan had the opportunity to become a professional athlete, but he chose to continue studying medicine. In 1971, with the help of his wife Li Shaofen, Zhong Nanshan was transferred to Guangzhou Fourth People's Hospital (later renamed the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College) to become a doctor. "When I was in college, I was a teacher, engaged in a new major, and later engaged in radiobiochemistry. I have always obeyed the assignment, and I have always been a pacesetter and advanced.
